What is the best Colorado Rocky Mountain Scenic Route?

Question by MB: What is the best Colorado Rocky Mountain Scenic Route?
I plan to enter Colorado coming from St. Louis on I-70 on day 1. What is the best scenic route for a 6-7 day all-around vacation (I want to be back in St. Louis by day 6 or 7). Also, if I leave St. Louis on day 1 early in the morning where should I stop for the night to avoid missing any scenery as I enter Colorado?

It’s about 850 miles from St. Louis to Denver. You might want to consider stopping about half way for the first night. So, I would suggest staying in Salina, Kansas. My favorite scenic route in Colorado is the “Peak to Peak” highway. Also, the “Trail Ridge Road” (highway 34) in the “Rocky Mounatin National Park” is a beautiful drive.

To get the Peak to Peak highway from Interstate 70, take exit 244 onto northbound Highway 119. The byway begins in Black Hawk and continues along Highways 119, 72, and 7 ending in Estes Park.

i did a colorado loop a few years ago and it was great!! night 1 , stay in denver–the next day head north about 90 miles to rocky Mountain nat’l park–from there i headed southwest towards Gunnison and Black Canyob nat’l park..then i continued on towards durango (you can even make a side trip to Telluride which i strongly recoomed).while in that area you’ll drive the famous Million Dollar Highway and pass a bunch of hot springs (Ouray has a public hot spring pool)..then work your way towards Pagosa Springs which also have great hotsprings and back up north towards denver– you can stop at Gran Sand Dunes monument and Pikes Peak in colorado springs along the way…this would make a great 6 day loop and you’ll see the best of colorado

Be sure to include a stop at the Four Corners monument, in the southwest corner of Colorado, in your travel plans. It’s quite a sight in its own right.
