Great Smoky Mountains Storm

July 5, 2012, after hiking to Clingman’s Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we returned to our truck just before this massive storm cloud rolled over the mountain. We feel very blessed to have made it off the mountain. We have heard that other hikers are still unaccounted for.

Two man traveling in a Cessna Model 182 airplane were not hurt when they crash landed at the Smoky Mountain Speedway on Brickmill Road in Blount County. According to Sheriff James Lee Berrong, the crash was reported around 11:15 on Tuesday.

Is christmas vacation a good time to visit smoky mounts? I am planning to drive down from san antonio.! Please suggest.

Me and my wife drove from Dallas to the Smoky Mountains last year. It is a long drive. If you are skilled at winter driving you should be okay. Those mountains get snow and ice in the winter. Be warned–the park facilities are quite spartan compared to Texas state parks. I can’t believe the US Park Service can’t afford to put showers at main campsites. When you go, check out Ashville, N.C. on the other side. Ashville is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains.
