Beyond The Ultimate are enjoying the high-life at the moment with the release of the Mountain Ultra, their high-altitude ultra endurance race over the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Fresh off the success of their Jungle Ultra race in Peru, the Mountain Ultra is the second race in a four race series which also includes the Desert Ultra and Ice Ultra. All races within the series have been designed around a multi-day, self-sufficient format with all competitors carrying their own sleeping provisions, food and clothes for the entire race, their packs often weighing in at 13kg or more. Multi-day ultra marathons often sit at the pinnacle of the amateur and professional runners career, with the very best examples being located in unusual and extreme environments they provide what most runners would agree is the ultimate running experience and challenge.

The Mountain Ultra starts in the beautiful town of Crested Butte with its picture perfect “old west” style streets and Mount Crested Butte as a backdrop. Crested Butte sits at 9000ft and actually marks the lowest point of the entire race, with the competitors being faced with climbs to a lofty 13000ft on 6 separate occasions. The total distance of 220km is split in to 5 stages, ranging between 30 and 80km, the shorter stages not always proving the easiest, often being bestowed with the most extreme inclines and declines of the entire race. As if this wasnt enough Beyond The Ultimate have added to the extreme nature of this challenge by holding a Tour de France style King/Queen of the Mountains stage during the race. A race within a race, competitors will be timed from base to summit of a one of the most severe climbs on the entire route, the fastest male and female taking the coveted red jersey for the year and being immortalised forever in the Red Jersey Hall of Fame. After each stage competitors will camp under the stars with their fellow runners, new found friends and race organisers alike giving the whole race a truly adventurous feel.

Beyond The Ultimate was originally conceived by Wes Crutcher whilst he was participating in an ultra marathon event October 2010. Wes experienced first-hand a complete disregard for competitor safety and a general lack of organisation during the race and immediately set about making a difference by designing a series of safe, tough and exciting ultra marathons for the world of running to enjoy. Race Director Drew Bock joined early 2011 and has been instrumental in the design of the Mountain Ultra. As an accomplished ultra runner in his own right Drew has added a great deal of expertise to the team. In addition to medical and office staff in the UK, Beyond The Ultimate employs the services of local guides and communities at each race location. By working with the local communities Beyond The Ultimate are able to provide an integrated race experience that benefits the area, the country as well as the competitors taking part.
