Despite the dismal overall ski season of 2011-12 in the Sierra, it was announced today that the 3 mountains now owned by Vail Resorts will stay open beyond the scheduled April 15th closing date on weekends. The Colorado based company has also offered skiers and riders a chance to purchase a “locals pass” which provides virtually unlimited access to all three ski areas for 9. next season…and by purchasing it now, the remaining days of this season will also be included. Now that Kirkwood ski area has been purchased by Vail Resorts for million, the corporate giant is accessing ways to improve the experience at it’s newest acquisition and will lean on longtime Kirkwood spokesperson “Coop” to share his passion and understanding of the mountain with his new bosses. While Heavenly at Tahoe South spans two states, enjoys spectacular views of Lake Tahoe from nearly every run on the California side and is in the heart of the “action”…Northstar Mountain Resort on the other side of the Lake prides itself on a thriving new village and family atmosphere. Kirkwood, known as “The Wood” to those in the know, offers far more challenging terrain than it’s new sister mountains, and has a “vibe” and culture all it’s own. The trick will be to maintain it’s unique character, yet improve the operation and experience for skiers and riders. “Coop” is beyond excited about the acquisition and shared some of the master plan ideas with media, and gives us the scoop.
