I used to live in Colorado Springs and have been to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It’s on a steep mountainside and is not particularly easy to find. Just look for the Shrine of the Sun monument on Cheyenne Mountain and drive towards it. The main road through the zoo leads up to that monument. It’s a pretty good zoo with quite a variety of animals but its big downside is that there is a lot of walking on steep terrain. One thing that’s interesting is that this zoo is the highest elevation zoo (more than 7000 feet above sea level) in the US. If you’re not used to the altitude, it will be an exhausting experience walking up and down the roads and sidewalks.

What train leaves here in the east (TN,KY,IL) and travels all the way to the west, preferably Idaho? I’ve looked at the Amtrak website and can’t seem to find a route like this.

Memphis to Boise takes about 60 hours via AmTrak (mostly). You change trains in Chicago, and Spokane to Boise is via Greyhound. Boise is apparently not served by AmTrak.
The Chicago – Spokane section of the trip is about 38 hours and is on the Empire Builder train:
